Important note for users with Windows XP Service Pack 2

If you are having problems with your Cisco VPN client since installing Windows XP Service Pack 2, you will need to perform the following procedure.  If you have already installed Service Pack 2 and your VPN client is working properly, you do not need to do anything.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 makes a number of changes to your system, the most notable of which is a new version of the Windows Firewall that is turned on by default.  Unfortunately this may break the functionality of the Cisco VPN client, causing you to be unable to connect to the State of Florida VPN service.

This document will help you determine if you have Windows XP Service Pack 2, and will guide you through the process of making changes to your system to help restore the functionality of the Cisco VPN Client.

Step-by-Step Procedure:

  1. Determine if you are running Windows XP Service Pack 2.  Click on Start, Run, and type “winver” (without the quotes) in the box and click OK.  An About Windows dialog box should appear like the one below.  Compare your Service Pack level to the one shown below.  If yours does not read “Service Pack 2”, STOP NOW, you do not need to follow this procedure.

  1. Open Control Panel by clicking on Start, Control Panel.  The Control Panel window will open and will look similar to the one below.  If your window looks different, don’t worry, you will still be able to continue.

  1. Click on Security Center, which will open up another window.

  1. Under the “Manage Security Settings for:” section, click on Windows Firewall.  The main Windows Firewall dialog will now open.

  1. Click on the Exceptions tab.  Your screen will look similar to the following:

  1. Now, we are going to add an Exception for a port used by the Cisco VPN program.  Click on Add Port.  In the box that appears, type VPN in the name field, and 62515 in the Port Number field.  Make sure UDP is selected.  Click OK.

  1. After entering the port, your Exceptions windows should look similar to the following:

  1. Click OK, and then close the Security Center and the Control Panel windows.  Reboot your PC.  You should now be able to successfully connect to the VPN service.
